New Hampshire Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut won’t be reappointed to a third term as the top official overseeing Granite State schools.

During his eight years at the helm of the education department, Edelblut championed school choice and was one of the leading voices behind the creation of New Hampshire’s Education Freedom Account program, which allows qualifying families to use public money toward homeschooling, private schooling or other educational expenses.

Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut will depart from his role at the end of the current school year, Gov. Kelly Ayotte announced Thursday afternoon.

Ayotte's office said Edelblut would remain in holdover status to support schools through the end of the school year.
