BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Just days before 10 men broke out of a New Orleans jail, officials with the sheriff’s office asked for money to fix faulty locks and cell doors deemed a key factor in the escape.

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said OPSO mishandled evidence and that the state was responsible for some inmate delays.

The manhunt for six men, including some accused of violent crimes, has alarmed New Orleans and brought new attention to the troubled Orleans Parish jail.

Ten men broke out of Orleans Parish jail early Friday morning, but only three were recaptured by Monday afternoon.
