In 2010, the Andrew Jackson Foundation started an annual commemoration of those once enslaved at The Hermitage. Former President Jackson owned 300 slaves in his lifetime.

The Andrew Jackson Foundation announced on Tuesday the appointment of Jason R. Zajac as its next president and CEO to replace Howard J. Kittell who retired in June after a 16-year tenure.

Andrew Jackson, who was appointed governor of the Florida Territories, was the first to run, and after a failed attempt in 1824, was elected and reelected in the next two contests.
