Eliminating extreme poverty—defined as surviving on $2.15 per person per day, in 2017 U.S. dollars—is the United Nations' top priority among 17 sustainable development goals.

But there are far fewer poor families in Chicago waging that fight these days. There were close to 600,000 city residents living below the poverty line in 2010, according to Census data.
