A passenger jet collided with a Black Hawk helicopter midair as the flight was approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, DC, Wednesday night, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

The U.S. Army said the Blackhawk was an Army helicopter, and defense officials told ABC News three soldiers were onboard the aircraft. The FAA closed the airport after the incident. Newly-sworn in Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he was at FAA headquarters and was monitoring the situation.

An American Airlines flight collided with a helicopter in midair as it approached DCA on Wednesday, the FAA said.
