A Rankin County jury began deliberating around 10:30 a.m. Friday on whether Carly Gregg is guilty of murdering her mom and two additional charges.

This following a dramatic week-long trial revolving around the 15-year-old Gregg, who shot and killed her mother, Ashley Smylie, in March of this year.

Closing arguments will begin on Friday, September 20 in the trial of the Rankin County teen accused of killing her mother. On Thursday, the state brought forth expert witnesses in rebuttal. They said there were contradictions in Carly Gregg’s story after her arrest in March 2024.

Carly Gregg, 15, was found guilty of murdering her mother and trying to kill her stepfather, facing life imprisonment.

A verdict has been reached in the trial of the Rankin County teen accused of killing her mother. This comes after the jury deliberated for a couple of hours on Friday morning after closing arguments from the state and the defense.
