The incident happened around 9:20 a.m. Thursday as organizers and volunteers were working along the race course ahead of Monday's marathon.

A dog mauling a woman was killed by police officers in Altavista on Friday morning, according to officials. The Altavista Police Department said their officers were first dispatched to the Toddsbury Road area for a 911 call reporting that a woman was screaming.

The dog was alive when police got it under control and placed it in the rear of a cruiser until city animal control personnel could take custody, according to police transmissions.
