WASHINGTON (AP) — As Republican senators consider President Donald Trump’s big bill that could slash federal spending and extend tax cuts, a new survey shows most U.S. adults don’t think the government is overspending on the programs the GOP has focused on cutting, like Medicaid and food stamps.

Americans broadly support increasing or maintaining existing levels of funding for popular safety net programs, including Social Security and Medicare, according to the poll from The-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Senate Republicans on Monday proposed steeper Medicaid cuts than those included in the House-passed version of President Donald Trump’s signature policy bill—making the bill’s passage by the July 4 deadline set by Congressional Republicans even more uncertain as Medicaid cuts have been a major sticking point for some in the GOP.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans on Monday proposed deeper Medicaid cuts, including new work requirements for parents of teens, as a way to offset the costs of making President Donald Trump’s tax breaks more permanent in draft legislation unveiled for his “big, beautiful bill.”

Hospital groups slammed the Senate’s version of the GOP legislation. The upper chamber “made a bad bill worse,” said Chip Kahn, CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals.
