The Walt Disney Co.’s “Mufasa” has claimed the No. 1 spot on the North American box office charts over the first weekend of 2025.

The holiday box office is closing out its final weekend with Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continuing to dominate. While Mufasa: The Lion King initially trailed, this weekend marks its first as the No. 1 movie at the box office, surpassing Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King both arrive in theaters this weekend, and early signs are that the blue fur ball will win the box office race (and have better reviews ). Expert forecasts have Sonic pegged between $60 and $70 million, while the Lion King prequel lands at $50 million.
