Nearly 2,200 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers in the Sawtelle and Westwood areas in West Los Angeles were without power Saturday due to metallic balloons that floated into power lines.

Almost 2,200 people living in West Los Angeles were without power for part of Saturday after power lines in their area were hit by metallic balloons, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

More than 1.3 million people were plunged into darkness early Tuesday. Failure of an underground power line is believed to be the cause and repairs could take up to two days.

Power was knocked out for thousands of LADWP customers in West LA on Saturday. Two major outages in Westwood and Sawtelle were related to metallic balloons, LADWP said. As of 2 p.m., power is expected to be restored around 5 p.
