United States President Donald Trump has decided to pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark-web black market Silk Road, who was convicted in 2015.
It was just after midnight when a phone call from an unknown number woke Dorine Núñez Ávila.
In 2015, a federal judge in Manhattan sentenced Ulbricht to life in prison for drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering.

President Trump has signed a “full and unconditional” pardon for Silk Road foudner and operator Ross Ulbricht. Silk Road was a notorious dark web marketplace selling illegal drugs, hacking tools and stolen passports during its operation between 2011 and 2013.

The news doesn't come as a surprise, however. Trump committed to the first-day pardoning of Ulbricht when speaking at the Libertarian National Convention in May 2024. The President said the decision to pardon the Silk Road founder was "in honor" of Ulbricht's mother, who had campaigned for his release.
