STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City will begin enforcing its mandatory compost program Tuesday after it launched across the five boroughs in October. Some city residents may have already received warnings since the program’s launch, but Tuesday marks the start of possible fines for not separating organic waste from the rest of your trash.

New York City’s waste reduction efforts will commence a new phase next week, as the city’s sanitation agency will begin enforcing a law-mandated composting program with fines. Starting April 1, residents will have to separate food waste from trash or risk receiving a $25 fine from the Department of Sanitation.

New York City residents who don’t abide by the city’s compost rules will be fined beginning on Tuesday, April 1. All New Yorkers must separate their organic refuse from their ordinary household trash. The compostable material must be put in its own separate bin and placed at the curb for pickup by the city Sanitation Department.
