Humans pump so much groundwater that Earth’s axis has shifted, study finds | CNN - CNN International
The redistribution of groundwater tilted Earth’s rotational axis east by more than 31 inches (78.7 centimeters) in just under two decades, according to the models.
Earth tilted 31.5 inches, a study finds. So whose fault is that? Humans, of course. The pumping of groundwater could affect the climate and make sea levels rise, according to a study.
The study included data from 1993 through 2010, and showed that the pumping of as much as 2,150 gigatons of groundwater has caused a change in the Earth’s tilt of roughly 31.5 inches.
