Former Malaysian Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin, who pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to disclose assets earlier this year, died early on Wednesday, his lawyer said. The 86-year-old Daim served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991 and from 1999 to 2001 under former premier Mahathir Mohamad.

Daim Zainuddin replaced Anwar Ibrahim as finance minister in 1998 after the latter was sacked following a fallout with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Former Malaysian Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin passed away at 86. He had been in ICU after a stroke and faced charges of failing to disclose assets earlier this year.

Daim was also a member of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Council of Eminent Persons during the latter’s second time as prime minister. Most recently, Daim had been the t
