The former Apollo 8 astronaut who captured the iconic 1968 “Earthrise” photo from space has tragically died in a plane crash.

Anders served as backup crew for Apollo 11 and for Gemini XI in 1966, but the Apollo 8 mission was the only time he flew to space. Anders was born on October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong.
