Multiple people were feared dead in a crowd crush at the world’s largest religious festival in India Wednesday, as tens of millions of devotees went to bathe in a river on one of the most sacred days of the Hindu festival.

More than seven people were killed in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, in the northern Indian holy city of Prayagraj on Wednesday.

Several casualties were feared after a “stampede-like situation” broke out in the early hours of Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh pilgrimage site in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, PTI reported. The situation arose as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
