Theileriosis, a disease carried by Asian longhorned ticks, has been detected in Iowa cattle for the first time. The disease can cause anemia and death in cattle, but it poses no risk to humans.
But the beef cow herd was at only 28.9 million near record low. Kevin Good, vice president of industry relations and analysis with CattleFax says that herd will continue to contract this year.
“Drying off six cows and making a mistake affects one or two cows. But drying off 60 or 600 cows at once, the stakes are higher and a greater proportion of animals are affected,” she says.
The farm-owned land at Estancia La Huella runs about 28,000 head of cattle across all categories. In recent years a breeding herd of 16,000 to 18,000 beef cows has been established.
Of the 87.2 million head inventory, all cows and heifers that have calved totaled 37.6 million. There are 28.2 million beef cows in the United States as of Jan. 1, 2024, down 2% from last year.
