PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - 69 years ago, a mistake in an ad led to a decades-long tradition of tracking Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, in 1955 a department store posted an ad with a phone number that children could call if they wanted to speak to Santa Claus.
How NORAD tracks Santa as he makes his gift deliveries
Santa has already made stops in places like Australia, China, Indonesia and Singapore to deliver billions of gifts. “Additionally, to talk to somebody and to find out where Santa is {call} 1-877-HI-NORAD.” NORAD says volunteers work hard all day, to keep the magic alive, answering more than 130,000 calls.
