A House committee voted 10-3 to approve a bill to remove fluoride from all water systems in the state, arguing people should get to decide for themselves what goes into their bodies.

The Utah Legislature is considering whether to ban adding fluoride to public water systems, just a few months after a federal court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency should take action to address potential health risks associated with high levels of the mineral in drinking water.

A bill that would prohibit fluoridation in Utah's water system has passed through committee and will advance to a vote on the house floor.

HB81, or Fluoride Amendments by Rep. Stephanie Gricius, R-Eagle Mountain, passed the House Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Committee on a 10-3 vote on Thursday, with the majority of those people testifying in favor of individual choice rather than mass “medication” of drinking water
