Oct 7, 2024 · The early logo of Iowa Hawkeye was based on the drawings of journalism professor Dick Spencer III, who offered his vision of the university mascot. He created a whole series of caricatures with an anthropomorphic hawk later named Herky.

Historically, the Hawkeyes prospered in wrestling, rugby, football and ice hockey, winning various awards and trophies. The brand’s very first logotype showed a large capitalized ‘i’ character, over which they drew a rugby ball.
