The influence of foreland structures on hinterland cooling: evaluating the drivers of exhumation in the eastern Bhutan Himalaya
climate and tectonics have shaped the Bhutan Himalaya. Several hypotheses can be proposed to explain the existence of these topographic benches or the escarpments that bound them to the north and south.
A study is underway in western Bhutan to figure out a package of rocks flanked by Greater Himalayan (GH) rocks and consisting of garnetiferous mica schist, quartzite, marble, calc-silicate, and slivers of orthogneiss, locally known as Paro Formation.
Bhutan was the ninth-ranked producer of silicon (silicon content of combined totals for ferrosilicon and silicon metal), accounting for 1.1% of the world’s production.

We link exhumational variability in space and time to the evolving geometry of the Himalayan fold–thrust belt in western Bhutan. By combining new and published geochronologic and thermochronologic data we document the burial age, peak temperatures and complete cooling history from 20 Ma to the present over an across-strike distance of ∼125 km.
