It's Red Squirrel Week! Red squirrels are one of our most iconic mammals. Once widespread throughout the UK they can now only be found in Scotland, north England, and Northern Ireland, with isolated populations in Wales, Merseyside, and islands off England’s southern coast. Red squirrels have a mainly vegetarian diet that includes seeds, hazelnuts and green acorns, fungus, bark, and sapwood. They also occasionally take animal prey such as young birds and eggs. 🐿️ Happy Red Squirrel Appreciation Day! 🐿️ The Isle of Wight is one of the few places in England where red squirrels are thriving, and it’s extra special because there are no grey squirrels here to compete with them. This red squirrel gracefully scampers through the trees using its tail for balance as it leaps. Did you know their tails double as cosy blankets in winter?
