Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has been a refuge for wildlife and people since its establishment in 1954. The protected acreage has grown over the decades, and as more people flock to the region, the Sanctuary’s rugged wilderness is becoming even more important to wildlife. Last week, the Sanctuary was the release site for a pair of orphaned raccoons. Yesterday, several visitors were lucky to encounter a Florida black bear along our boardwalk. We thought we would take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of our "No Food Allowed on the Boardwalk" rule. Especially at this time of year, young bears are on the move looking for new food sources, and they have an amazing sense of smell.
