Prosopis poses a major threat to scarce water resources in arid areas. These trees have an extensive root system and very long tap root that can extend into groundwater supplies, resulting in reduced borehole outputs. Dense stands of Prosopis can use up to six times more water than natural indigenous vegetation, thus aquifer recharge is also negatively affected.
