During the Vietnam War, which lasted over 20 years, Vietnam and some of its neighboring countries became testing grounds for chemical defoliants of the most toxic kind. It was a textbook definition of chemical warfare, and during 9 years the U.S. military dropped over 20 million gallons of this herbicide over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
